Carry-on Baggage Guide

Carry-on Baggage at International Airports

Airlines have a number of baggage restrictions in place to ensure your safety while flying. In addition to Dangerous Goods regulations, there are restrictions on the amount of liquids, gels and aerosols that you can bring onboard your international flight. Save time at the airport by planning ahead and pack your bags in accordance with the following restrictions.

Baggage Restrictions

All liquids, aerosols or gels bought onto an international flight as carry-on baggage must not exceed 100 millilitres.

Partially filled containers larger than 100 millilitres will not be accepted.

Containers holding such substances must be sealed in a transparent, one-litre plastic bag – any resealable bag that can hold 1 litre or less is acceptable.

Only one carry-on plastic bag per person is allowed.

Additional substances may be stored in your check-in baggage

Restricted Substances

Restricted substances apply to all forms of liquids, gels and aerosols including drinks, perfumes, deodorants, creams, sprays, gels, toothpaste, lipstick, lip balm and similar substances.

Liquids, gels and aerosols that fall under the Dangerous Goods regulations are naturally banned from flying.

Exemptions

Medicines

Prescription medicines may be taken on board flights into and out of Australia however proof of need, such as a doctor's certificate, may be required. Non-prescribed medicines that are essential to flying are also allowable but must be in quantities for use during the flight only. A reasonable allowance for possible delays is accepted.

Baby Products

Bay products such as sterilised baby water, baby milk, baby juice, baby food and gel-filled baby products are allowed onboard within quantities required for use during the flight. People with baby products would be expected to have a baby with them.

Duty Free

Duty free items taken through screening are subject to the same rules as other liquids, aerosols and gels. To avoid your duty free items being confiscated, purchase them after you have passed through the screening point on the final leg of your journey. For specifics about the rules in effect at your transit stops, refer to your airline.
