So, Where to Go?

Every continent in the world provides opportunity for an adventure experience. Adventure is very often in the mind – and where you look for it – but to get you started here's some suggestions:

  • Cycling adventure travel through the length of Vietnam, starting in the Mekong Delta and finishing in Halong Bay where you can rest your tightly toned legs as you relax back on a junk cruise through the towering limestone islands. Or skip the bike ride and just go the cruise!
  • How about Africa adventure travel? Visit the game parks of Masai Mari and Lake Nakuru or safari into gorilla mountain country, climb Kilimanjaro, join a camel train through Morocco, explore the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, or ride the white water of the Bylde River Canyon. Africa's a big country.
  • Launch yourself into one of the adrenalin adventure tours through New Zealand experiencing fast-paced action including canyon swings, bungy jumping, a hiking adventure tour through the breathtaking high-country, or for extreme adventure skiing try Mt Cook.
  • Explore the spectacular isolation of the Pyrenees or discover the remote village of La Celada in Andalucía, southern Spain – they only recently discovered cars.
  • For adventure holidays with a difference, go dog sledding or join a musk ox safari in Greenland. Pause to hear the silence, stand in awe beneath the aurora borealis and sit on a headland and watch whales breaching.
  • Go mountain top touring or ice climbing in Norway or embrace polar adventure travel and kayak with whales in Antarctica.
  • Take your next adventure holidays at home and discover the stars on a Nullarbor adventure camping safari or breathe in the pristine beauty of the Kimberley.

Really, it doesn't matter what you do. Adventure travel is something different for everyone. For some it might be visiting the Louvre or Stonehenge, for others it's extreme caving in the Magaliesburg Mountain Range, South Africa, and for others it's volunteer adventure travel.

Volunteering for many is the new adventure travel. Volunteer adventure trips can find you teaching English in the interior of China, building a well in Zambia, saving the orang-utans in Sumatra or working in an orphanage in Cambodia.

Top Five Adventure Travel Tips

  • Keep up to date with travel warnings and advice for the region you're in or travelling to. www.smartraveller.gov.au is a good start.
  • Get a medical and dental check before you go and get all necessary shots.
  • Post your itinerary with DFAT (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade). If you're going solo to out of the way regions let the local authorities know, and keep your family up to date always.
  • Get comprehensive travel insurance and check the policy to ensure your adventure experience, or organised adventure package, is covered.
  • Be flexible and take your sense of humour with you. After all, adventure travel is meant to be fun – so have the time you'll remember all your life.
