London is renowned for its theatre performances with blockbuster musicals, plays and opera dominating the entertainment options. The heart of the theatre district is Leicester Square and its famous half tix booth, offering discount tickets to big names shows. The most famous theatres include those on Shaftesbury Ave namely the Gielgud and the Lyric.
Opera buffs have the choice of the English National Opera in St Martin's Lane and the opulent Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. The Royal Opera House was recently renovated and regularly attracts big name performers. For ballet consider heading up to Sadler's Wells in London's north.
Theatre enthusiast will appreciate a trip to Stratford-upon-Avon for a Shakespeare performance in the birth town of the Bard. The Royal Shakespeare Company performs outstanding productions in the dedicated theatre in this quaint English town. A visit to Shakespeare's grave is also obligatory.

There are many airlines that offer flights to London from Australia that involve a stopover in a third destination.
