More Information
Begin your Bejing holiday with a visit to the city’s most important palace, the Forbidden City. The imperial palace was completed in 1420 and comprises 980 buildings, making it the largest surviving palace in the world. Found in the Dongcheng District, the Forbidden City was once the palace for the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Today the palace is one of Beijing biggest attractions. Walk through the famous halls of the palace, admire the unique and intricate architecture and view the decadent Ming and Qing collections of artwork and artifacts.
From the Forbidden City you can walk to Tiananmen Square, the third largest city square in the world. Tiananmen Square was originally built in 1651 as part of the Tiananmen Gate that was designed to protect the Forbidden City. Since then the square has doubled in size to 440,000 square metres. Over the years the square has been the sight of many public celebrations, political events and protests, most notably the protests in 1989. People are free to visit the square up until 10:30pm when it is closed for the night.
Though a visit to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square is must during the day, head here at night as well to take in the bright lights and stunning atmosphere.
