The first place of worship constructed on the site of the Hagia Sophia was inaugurated in 360CE, with the current structure dating to 532CE under Emperor Justinian I. Over the centuries earthquakes, fire and conflict have caused significant damage to the building; the famous dome has collapsed several times. Hagia Sophia was transformed from a church to a mosque after Sultan Mehmed took control of Constantinople in 1453. Today the building remains one of the most important examples of Byzantine architecture.
Affectionately known as the Blue Mosque because of the distinctive blue tiles adorning the walls, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque was completed in 1616 after five years of construction. The architectural style incorporates elements from Byzantine structures such as the Hagia Sophia and more traditional Islamic architecture. Today the mosque remains in use and has the capacity to hold 10,000 worshippers.
Also consider visiting the Ottoman Süleymaniye Mosque, completed in 1558.
Istanbul Airport
Istanbul Ataturk Airport, 24km from the centre, is the city’s principle airport. Flights from Australia to Istanbul generally take between 19 and 22 hours, depending on connections. There are bus and train connections to central Istanbul.
