Located 50 kilometres northwest of the city and known as the Cradle of Humankind, the area is essentially a collection of caves that contain some of the oldest hominid fossils ever discovered – some being a massive 3.5 million years old. Experts first identified the significance of the area in 1935 and the archaeology site has continued to yield an incredible array of fossils and skeletal remains.
The Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is one of closest game reserves to central Johannesburg. The park, named after sugar cane that was found growing in the region in the early nineteenth century, provides many hiking trails to allow enthusiasts to appreciate the natural beauty of the region. Around 200 bird species have been spotted in the region. Lucky visitors may spot aardvarks, wildebeests, hyenas, baboons and springboks.
Consider exploring the Old Kromdraai Gold Mine, a mine that originally brought prosperity to the city in the nineteenth century.

Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, 30km from the city centre, is the principle airport for Johannesburg. Flights from Australia to Johannesburg generally take between 13 and 15 hours. There are train and bus connections to central Johannesburg.
