The current Neo-Romanesque Manila Cathedral was built between 1954 and 1958 and elevated to the rank of minor basilica by Pope John Paul in 1981. The site has been home to several Cathedrals – the first being constructed from bamboo in 1581 and destroyed by fire two years later. Subsequent buildings were destroyed by earthquakes, with the second most recent reduced to rubble during the liberation of the city in 1945. The funerals of two former presidents were held in the Manila Cathedral including Carlos P. Garcia and Corazon Aquino.
Located within the historic Intramuros district, another fascinating church is the San Agustin Church, the oldest place of worship standing in the Philippines. The current structure was completed in 1607 and later renovated in 1854. Miraculously, the church has withstood damage from around a dozen significant earthquakes – many delivering substantial damage to Manila. It is widely accepted the elliptical foundation saved the structure from destruction.

Ninoy Aquino International Airport, 7km from the city centre, is the principle airport for Manila. Flights from Australia to Manila generally take between eight and twelve hours. There are train and bus connections to central Manila.
