To ensure a return to visit to Rome, legend has it that visitors should throw coins into the Trevi Fountain, an ostentatious Baroque water feature. Work on the current fountain began in 1732 after a design competition was held by Pope Clement XII and completed three decades and numerous designers later. The attraction stands 26 metres high and 20 metres wide and was used as the backdrop for certain scenes in the famous film, Roman Holiday starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.
In ancient times, Rome had nine aqueducts leading to 39 monumental fountains and 591 public basins. Today fountains remain a significant feature of Rome. Apart from the Trevi Fountain other fountains worth admiring include the Fontana del Tritone, Fontana dell’Acqua Felice and Fontana Dell’Acqua Paola.
