One of the premiere attractions in the city is Alcatraz Island, home to the now de-commissioned infamous Alcatraz Prison. The island’s history as a prison dates to the American Civil War when prisoners from the war were relocated. It remained a military prison until 1933 when the civilian United State Department of Justice took control, with the first civilian inmates taking up residence from 1934. For the next 29 years the jail became home to Al Capone, Robert Franklin Stroud who was dubbed the birdman of Alcatraz and George “Machine Gun” Kelly.
Escaping from Alcatraz was a pre-occupation of many in-mates. However the chilly waters and deadly currents were significant impediments. Interestingly it was one of the few prisons in America that had hot showers so that the prisoners didn’t become acclimatised to cold water. Thirty-six in-mates attempted to escape with only three never being seen again. The escape was used as inspiration for a feature film in 1979. Escape from Alcatraz starred Clint Eastwood and implied that the three prisoners survived the escape.
Regular ferries depart from Fisherman’s Wharf to take visitors to and from Alcatraz.
San Francisco Airport
San Francisco International Airport, 21km from the centre, is the city’s principle airport. Flights from Australia to San Francisco generally take between 13 and 16 hours. There are train connections to central San Francisco.
