To enjoy the therapeutic nature of a traditional Chinese garden, head to the Yuyuan Garden, one of the most lavish ornamental gardens in the region. The gardens were initially created as a private oasis in 1559 by a public official in the Ming Dynasty court. Over the centuries the garden's vitality fell in and out favour depending on the political situation at the time. The Government repaired the gardens after the Japanese occupation during World War II and the attraction was formally opened to the public in 1961.
Horticultural enthusiasts will also appreciate strolling through the Shanghai Botanical Gardens. First laid out in 1954, the gardens were opened to the public in 1978. Today there are 81.68 hectares containing an incredible array of flora from all over the world.
Nearby Suzhou boasts many beautiful traditional gardens that can be easily explored as a day trip from Shanghai.
