Where to Stay
America has an extensive range of accommodation options to suit all budgets and tastes. On offer is everything from opulent, high-end offerings to more humble hostels for backpackers. Browse our range of American accommodation.
Transport
There are several options to choose from when travelling around America. Since the country is even larger than Australia, flying from A to B is generally the best option. However, rail passes and the extensive bus network can be a great way to see America's diverse natural beauty. On the other hand, America offers the opportunity to experience a classic road trip. Consider hiring a car and driving yourself along legendary routes such as Route 66.
Flights
You can fly non-stop from Australia to America on Qantas, Virgin Australia, Delta or United, which takes approximately 14 hours if flying from Sydney to LA. Alternatively, numerous other airlines offer the trip with one or two stops, including Air New Zealand, Air Pacific, Singapore Airlines, Air China and Malaysia Airlines.
Climate
America boasts a vast array of different natural environments, so climate patterns vary from region to region. Even in winter, snow will cover the northern cities while Florida continues to enjoy relatively warm temperatures.
Food
This is the land of the oversized meal and fast food chains. Luckily, there is also delicious cuisine prepared by award-winning chefs in the hundreds of fine-dining restaurants. Whatever nationality of food you crave, chances are you’ll find it in metropolitan cities. One thing is certain - you'll never go hungry in America.
Insider Tips
Visitors to America often get caught up in the hype of the big cities. If you can, try and journey off the beaten track and experience the depths of the Grand Canyon, the cliffs and waterfalls of the Yosemite National Park and the pristine wilderness of Alaska. Another important thing to remember is that tipping is expected throughout the country. About 15% is standard for service staff, and one or two dollars for taxis and porters. Finally, if you're under 21, don't get caught out by America's legal drinking age.
