Food
Vanuatu has several traditional dishes that demand a taste. A lap-lap is a vegetable cake made of cassava, sweet potato, taro or yam placed into a banana leaf and often served with a chicken wing. A tuluk is similar but features meat instead of the vegetable option. The region is renowned for its quality steaks best enjoyed with fresh market produce.
Insider Tips
As a South Pacific island destination, snorkelling and diving are common activities through the impressive maritime wonderland easily explored from the islands. For a unique nautical experience, consider checking out the world’s only underwater post office located three meters below the surface in Hideaway Island’s marine sanctuary. Enthusiasts can post special waterproof postcards that are embossed instead of stamped. Back on dry land, the Port Vila Markets offer the opportunity of sampling fresh goods or purchasing local handicrafts. The country also boasts several active volcanoes on land and underwater. Consider visiting the Mt Yasur Volcano, one of the world’s most active and accessible volcanoes.
