Where to Stay

There are numerous cities and towns worth visiting throughout Vietnam, each with its own distinct character. The most important thing is to choose a hotel with a good name that is also close to the sights you want to see. In Ho Chi Minh City, we recommend staying in District 1, preferably around the Dong Khoi area if it's atmosphere you're after. In Hanoi, anywhere near the Hoan Kiem Lake will ensure you're in a prime spot for both shopping and sightseeing. Book your Vietnam accommodation

Transport

Within each city, the best way to get around is generally by taxi, as public transport can be both limited and overcrowded. To avoid being scammed, stick with the larger companies like Mai Linh (green cabs), and always confirm the fare will be on the metre before beginning your journey. The average fare should be around 12,000 VND per kilometre. In quieter places like Phu Quoc Island and Hoi An, hiring a scooter is a cheap and enjoyable way of getting around, and should cost between 150,000 and 200,000 VND per day. If you simply want someone else to show you the sights, perhaps a Vietnam tour is the way to go.

Flights

You can fly non-stop from Australia to Vietnam on both Qantas and Vietnam Airlines. Carriers that fly to Vietnam with one stopover include Malaysia Airlines, Thai Airways, Korean Air and more. The direct flight from Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City is about nine hours in duration.

Climate

The climate in Vietnam varies significantly between regions. The south has two distinct seasons: the dry season (November to April), and the wet season (May to October). Temperatures here are high all year round. Northern Vietnam has colder winters, but still gets very warm in the summer months, particularly July and August. Pack a raincoat if visiting the north between February and September.

Food

It hardly needs to be said that the Vietnamese are famous for their beautiful food. Traditional cuisine focuses heavily on fresh herbs and vegetables, soup, noodles, rice and fish sauce. For a light lunch or snack, try the most common local dish, Vietnamese noodle soup, or “Pho”. You can enjoy a delicious Vietnamese meal at a gourmet restaurant for as little as seven or eight dollars. If you end up in Hoi An, don't miss out on a meal (or two) at Morning Glory.

Insider Tips

Vietnam is a traveller's wonderland full of unique experiences and spectacular sights. Be sure to take a journey off the beaten path and experience everyday life in the countryside. A private half-day bicycle tour from Can Tho will give you exactly this, and is best organised through a reputable hotel. Pay a visit to Phu Quoc Island near Vietnam's southern tip for an infectious laidback lifestyle and one of the most spectacular sunsets you'll ever see. In the hustle and bustle of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, the best advice we can give you is to watch how a local crosses the road, and copy. Finally, don't miss out on a visit to Hoi An for cheap tailor-made clothing, delicious food and charming scenery.
