Days 1-2 Madrid
Arrive in cosmopolitan Madrid, Spain's art and culture capital. Peruse art at Museo del Prado, seek out a bargain around the Puerta del Sol or kick back in busy Plaza Mayor or experience old-world Spain on a day trip to the medieval city of Toledo. When the sun sets, perhaps join the Madrilenos in Malasana for a glass or two of sherry or head to the Gran Via hotspots to dance the night away.

Day 3 Cordoba
Discover the mesh of Muslim, Jewish and Christian cultures in the architecture and cuisine of the southern city of Cordoba. Perhaps visit the Mezquita with its golden arches and intricate columns or take a walk through the maze of the old quarter with its cobbled lanes, pleasant squares and riots of potted colour.

Days 4-5 Seville
Visit Seville and be swept up in the emotion of a fiery flamenco performance. See the world's largest Gothic cathedral and its imposing Moorish tower or enjoy the tranquil gardens in the Parque de Maria Luisa. Seville is the tapas capital of Spain so feast on tasty morsels before a twilight wander through El Centro.

Days 6-7 Costa de la Luz
Travel to Costa de la Luz and enjoy an optional day tour across the border to the British territory of Gibraltar, home to the famous Rock of Gibraltar, or go one step further to Tangier in Morocco. There's also plenty of time to visit the sandy beaches of Tarifa for sun and surf.

Days 8-9 Ronda
Leave the Andalucian hills and journey to Ronda, a whitewashed town split in half by a deep chasm and joined by the amazing Puente Nuevo. Perhaps toil down the hand-hewn stairs of La Mina to the river below.

Days 10-11 Granada
There's time to explore the old Arab quarter of Albayzin with its maze of alleyways and sweeping views of the Sierra Nevada. For the best view of Granada at sunset, head to the Mirador de San Nicolas at the very top of the city's steep streets. A visit to the exceptional Alhambra - a red fortress overlooking Granada - is a must.

Days 12-13 Valencia
Travel further north to Valencia, Spain's third-largest city. There's plenty to see and do here so why not start the day with a breakfast of tortillas or churros at the morning market. Then be sure to visit Valencia's cathedral, which allegedly houses the Holy Grail.

Days 14-15 Barcelona
In vibrant Barcelona, take time to visit the Picasso Museum and Gaudi's eccentric La Sagrada Familia. Squeeze in a spot of shopping, stroll Las Ramblas or to soak up the relaxed vibe along Barcelona's waterfront before saying hasta luego to wonderful Spain.

Day 16 Pamplona
For centuries Pamplona has served as both a military stronghold and an important point on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage trail. Get familiar with this city on a leisurely walking tour. Meander down winding alleys and step inside ornate cathedrals - in fact, Pamplona's Gothic cathedral is one of the most important religious buildings in Spain.

Days 17-18 Logrono
Logrono in the far north of Spain is noted for its delicious Rioja wine; drop by the wine museum to learn more about this region's famous tipple. Take the time to visit the cathedral or enjoy a leisurely walk along the river.

Days 19-20 San Sebastian
Travel to San Sebastian and relish the cool breezes coming off the Bay of Biscay. With its beautiful Old Town, a lively beach scene and a plethora of pintxos bars, San Sebastian is the perfect place to kick back and relax. Why not take a walk to the top of Mt Urgull for memorable views over the town below or catch the bus to Bilbao and visit Frank Gehry's architectural masterpiece, the Guggenheim.

Days 21-22 Madrid
Arrive in magical Madrid, a city overflowing with world-class art galleries, atmospheric city squares, manicured parks and gardens and heaving nightclubs and bars. Make time to celebrate the end of the North Spain adventure by visiting one of Madrid's lively neighbourhoods. Try tapas - a small dish traditionally served with a drink - sample some local wine and quickly discover why this is one the most loved cities in Spain.
