Get Beached In Phuket

Flight Centre travel consultant Clare Jorgensen reveals her favourite Phuket beaches.

Phuket. Nestled in the Andaman Sea and boasting a stunning coastline, it is home to pad thai, a mean deep tissue massage, humidity and beauty beyond belief. We all know Aussies love a fine stretch of sand to practice their cricket, dig oversize useless holes and sip a cocktail. And Phuket’s charismatic locals, tantalising cuisine and colourful shopping will win you over before you even step off the plane. Whether you’ve been 100 times or are thinking about making that mandatory pilgrimage north to Thailand that so many Aussies take for the first time, let Phuket entice you with its beachy charms.

Let’s Bang Tao to business

Located 30 minutes from Phuket International Airport, Bang Tao Beach is a fantastic location if travelling with children is part of your holiday plans. With a large variety of resort-style accommodation, Bang Tao gives mum and dad the opportunity to keep kiddies and teens alike entertained in ultra-cool kids clubs. We are talking treehouses, super-soaker battles and treasure hunts galore. A cool kids club  equals a cool kid and a cool kid means the parentals can enjoy their own R&R in adults-only pools, therapeutical spas and maybe a sneaky game of golf.

Of course, time away from the termites isn’t what a family holiday is all about; that’s why direct beach access, eatery opportunities galore, banana boating, water parks and a little retail therapy are all moments away. Bang Tao is the beach you are after if your travelling troupe includes grandma to babe and everyone in between.

Seriously, what’s not to love about Cape Panwa beach? (Image: Getty)

It’s Cape Panwa, not Cape Panwarrrr

Lovers, this one is for you. Located on the very southern tip of Phuket Island, one hour’s drive from the airport; Cape Panwa lends itself to luxury.  With exclusive beachfront properties specialising in seclusion, romance and all things 5-star; this mesmerising location is one for the grown-ups. With opportunities for yacht hire (because who doesn’t love their own yacht for a day,a week or a year?) to explore the archipelago of many small, secluded, uninhabited islands off the Cape,  you will be asking your significant other if it is really necessary to return to real life. With azure waters and fine white beaches, the snorkelling, sunbathing and dropping-to-one-knee opportunities are abundant.

Patong Beach is easily the most famous in Phuket. (Image: Getty)

In the throng of Patong

Oh Patong. Home to Phuket’s infamous Bangla Road, curbside crepes, Muay Thai showdowns and the wonder that is a ladyboy. An hour and a half from the airport, by day Patong is all hustle and bustle, circulating around the skilled verbal dance of haggling. A salsa of poker faces, dramatics and an immoveable budget mentality meets an unstoppable bargain. Thrilling stuff. By night? Well, you have to see it to believe it. Patong is for those who want to throw themselves into the heart of Phuket.

Loud, sweaty, spicy and undeniably alive; it is here you find the pulse of Thailand. Of course, when daylight returns, the pulse is often found recovering on Patong Beach with a bloody mary. It takes a wild one to keep up with the cultural melting pot that is Patong – but if you can, you’ll never be disappointed.

Maya Bay in the Phi Phis is simple stunning. (Image: Getty)

Go see the Phi Phis

Phi Phi Island is the Rottnest Island of Perth; the Tassie of Australia; the Hong Kong of China – just a short boat ride away from Phuket. When you think of Phi Phi; think adventure, think fun, think beautiful. The Phi Phi Islands can be a day trip from Patong or an island getaway. Catering to all levels of motivation, you can sleep on the beach while others roar around on a jet-ski. You can snorkel with the fishes or eat some for lunch. Kayak around the islands or lap them in a speedboat.

Aside from its ridiculous ability to cater to everyone’s idea of holiday; it is simply stunning. It is a feast for the senses, from the warm, temperate crystal-clear waters to the lush jungle that meets the sand. You will be Instagramming your surroundings for days. Phi Phi island is exciting and classic. It’s James Bond. Although, golden guns are optional.
