Let’s face it, the cost of living is going up and we’re all looking for ways to cut down on expenses. But that doesn’t mean we have to cut them out entirely! Need a change of scenery in 2024? Or maybe you’re just looking for a reasonable holiday option not too far from home? There are 2,000 reasons to take a holiday in the new year, and it doesn’t need to break the bank.

As Travel Experts, we’re here to help inspire your next great escape, so we’ve done a little research to give you an idea of what $2,000 could look like on your next holiday.

There are plenty of domestic options right here in Australia, from croc-spotting in the Top End to sampling the cheeses of Tasmania; it’s also cheaper to live it up in the luxury in Bali or the South Pacific than you might think! Maybe you’re in the mood for a road trip around New Zealand or a culinary tour of Vietnam. It’s all possible with the right deal and the right budget.

Here are three of our top picks for holidays you can have on a $2,000 budget.

Option One: Bali & Tokyo Deals

Holidays to Bali and Japan offer up some irresistible package holidays including flights and accommodation that can start from $1,200 to $1,900*. That leaves you with a little spending money to eat, drink, shop, spa and sight-see. Note too that in Bali your  Australian dollar goes a lot further, while the exchange rate with the Japanese Yen is currently quite favourable.

If you’re in the mood for lazy days by the pool and pump-up evenings at the clubs, Bali is calling your name. A city break in any of Japan's major cities like Tokyo, Osaka or Sapporo offers neon-lit nightlife, amazing culinary experiences and visits to timeless Zen temples.

Option Two: South Pacific In A Jiffy

When you think South Pacific, you’re probably thinking Fiji and Vanuatu. While they’re both great destinations, did you know that New Zealand, Tahiti, the Cook Islands, New Caledonia, Bora Bora and Samoa are all part of this wonderful tropical cavalcade too?

With a humble holiday budget, you can take a cruise from Brisbane or Sydney around the South Pacific from approximately $600* per person or book a New Zealand adventure from around $1,530*. Prefer not to cruise? It's also possible to fly from Sydney to Queenstown or Auckland and back for approximately $650*! Did someone say long weekend in New Zealand?

Option Three: Keep It Local

Woking with a $2,000 holiday budget doesn’t need to limit you to budget deals for Indonesia or quick trips to New Zealand. Stretch your cash and keep it domestic this year!

If you haven’t been to Tasmania yet, it’s hot on every food and wine aficionado's lips right now, not to mention Hobart’s divisive cultural offering, the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). Return flights from Melbourne to Tassie are currently starting from around $180*, which leaves plenty of cash for accommodation and indulging the palate. Looking for the delights of a gastronomical escape with your significant other? Try this 4-night stay at Movenpick Hotel in Hobart complete with wine, cheese and chocolate tours starting from $1,995*.
