If you’re looking for the quintessential Australian outback experience then Alice Springs has it all - red hot, dusty deserts, lazy billabongs, eccentric locals and a picturesque landscape that is treacherous and enticing at the same time. The small metropolis that has emerged complements the remote location providing a shelter and protective guard.

Smack-bang in the centre of Australia, Alice Springs was originally home to the Arrente Aboriginal people until the late 1800s when cattle stations were established near the former telegraph station. You can explore the world as the indigenous owners see it, starting from the Dreamtine, at Aboriginal Art World. Here you can view the works of indigenous artists and in some cases visit their workshops.
Driving is a long way to get there - 17 hours from Darwin and 18 hours from Adelaide. Another option you might try is the airport in Alice Springs with connecting flights from the major Australia cities. Seeing the famous sunset will be incentive enough for the journey, the sky seemingly on fire with the sun’s passing light.
There are a number of annual events to take part in from from the Alice Show Festival to the Camel Cup, a camel race in July which is exactly what it sounds like. One of the best things to do in the Alice is to get out of town and get trekking. There are a number of exciting week long expeditions to sign up for - make sure you find one that takes you past Uluru - a sacred Aboriginal rock formation with surrounding cave paintings and relics, just under 500kms (300 miles) from Alice. And only go exploring in your own party if you are very experienced and follow all the recommended procedures.
Find out the history behind one of the cornerstones of Australian rural life: the Royal Flying Doctor Service & School of Air Museum. A hospital service that still exists to this day, the Flying Doctor is an institution Australians are rightly proud of.
Whether you’re trekking the outback trails, enjoying beers with the locals or watching an AFL match on a Sunday, the Alice is very likely to offer far more than you expect.
