Bay of Fires Information

If you are looking for a place to experience pristine white beaches, bright blue waves and an all-round incredible stretch of coastline, the Bay of Fires is a perfect place to visit. It was so named by a British explorer who in 1773 saw aboriginal fires burning along the beaches. The Bay of Fires stretches from Binalong Bay to Eddystone Point on Tasmania’s north eastern edge.

St Helens, just south of the Bay of Fires is great place to begin any trip to the area. One of the larger towns in the region, this thriving seaside town offers ample options for accommodation and activities. The area caters to those looking for surfing, deep sea fishing and four-wheel driving. St Helens is also famous for its extensive underwater sea caves and kelp forests, if you’re feeling more daring.

Take a short 15 minute drive northwards to the sensational Binalong Bay. The gateway to the Bay of Fires, there are plenty of accommodation options and a short term holiday rental is readily available though you might need to book ahead in January and at Easter. For those looking to relax in the area, Binalong Bay is a perfect place to let yourself go and just do nothing. There are spectacular white sandy beaches and small rocky coves all through the area just waiting to be lazed upon. There are short walking trails from the beach running back into the Bay of Fires Conservation Area where you’ll find some incredible native bird and animal life.

Whilst most visitors focus on the southern end, near Binalong Bay, it is well worth wandering towards the Gardens and as far north as Eddystone Point. The areas are much less populated and quite often you may find yourself alone on amazing undisturbed beaches. There are camping spots throughout the Mount William National Park and places to stay at the Gardens. Four day bush walks are also run out of the area for those looking for a more in depth experience and include nightly lodge and camping options.
