A visit to Katoomba, the largest town in the area, allows you an opportunity to marvel at the Three Sisters, a spectacular rock formation in the Jamison Valley. But from the viewing platform, you may be even more enthralled by the colour of the valley itself. The distinct bluish haze forms as a result of evaporation from the leaves of the eucalyptus trees, that are abundant in the area.  A visit to the Scenic Railway, the world’s steepest railway is also highly recommended. Designed in Switzerland, the train carries 84 passengers and operates daily, with rides every 10 minutes.

The Norman Lindsay Gallery in Katoomba shows some groundbreaking Australian art in a superb garden setting, while a visit to neighbouring Leura is a excellent place to enjoy some old-style Australian cuisine. The Leura Lolly Shop, situated in the Leura mall, is an absolute must visit for anyone in the area. With lollies and sweets packing the walls from floor to ceiling, it’s a perfect place to enjoy a little treat.

For the more adventurous types, the Blue Mountains area is a veritable wonderland. Activities in the area include bush walking, rock climbing and abseiling as well as caving, kayaking and mountain biking.  Katoomba and Oberon are centres for these activities and services run all year round. If you are really serious, you might consider walking the six foot track, a three day 30 mile (44km) from Katoomba to the Jenolan Caves, otherwise it’s about an hour and a half drive.  The Jenolan Caves, the world’s oldest discovered open caves are well worth a visit whatever your mode of transport.

Blackheath, a short trip along the Great Western Highway to the north of Katoomba, provides a great opportunity to marvel at the Blue Mountains from another perspective. There are lots of walking trails scattered through the area.  Govetts Leap which overlooks the valley is known for its views. If you’re feeling hungry, The Hydro Majestic in Medlow Bath, offers a range of dining options and a superb view of the Megalong Valley.

The Blue Mountains are easily accessible by car and are about a 90 minute drive from Sydney. Public transport options are also available from Sydney’s Central station and are run daily throughout the year.
