Bouddi National Park was created from a Public Recreation Area which was dedicated in 1922 to which several areas have been added subsequently – and it continues to grow. Parts were mined for coal and also for sand and minerals.

Bouddi has meaning in several different aboriginal languages. ‘heart’ or ‘water breaking over rocks’. It was the aboriginal name for the eastern headland of Maitland Bay. The lands belonged to the Kurringai people and the park has 100’s of aboriginal sites. These include middens, engravings and rock shelters with drawings and paintings. The Hawkesbury sandstone provided ideal surface for art and produced a unique style of life size drawings and engravings of fish, whales and shields.
