Clare Valley Information

Ever wanted to find the face behind the wine?  Who spent the months growing the grapes to create the perfect recipe - at Clare Valley you’ll meet the makers at the family-owned wineries that drape around the edge of South Australia.  Situated from Auburn up to Jamestown about 75 miles (115 kms) from Adelaide, this region is one of the oldest wine provinces in Australia - its age present in the taste of its mature Rieslings that are the specialty.

Boasting forty wineries running along the Main North Road this area is best discovered by car *[car hire in Adelaide] although cycling is fast becoming a popular option.  The scenic routes through rolling green vineyards are straight out of a watercolour and there is no need to rush - there’s a reason why the motto is “a time to relax.”

Of course the thing to do in wine country is sample some delicious drops and Sevenhill Cellars is a great place to start.  With classic Riesling and full-bodied reds available for tasting and purchase this hundred plus year old winery is filled with history and tradition.  Explore the underground cellars to see the ins and outs of wine-making, you’ll leave feeling educated and slightly merrier.

There’s more to the region than just the exceptional wines, open the cellar door to what lies beneath Clare Valley’s rich culture of galleries, golf courses even horse racing in the annual Balaklava Cup in September.  Explore the early settler life of the area at the National Trust Museum, here you’ll learn about the town’s founders - Jesuit priests from modern Poland who first produced sacramental wine, a delicacy still on offer today!

With so many food and wine events available in the region plan your trip to Clare Valley when the town is a flurry of activity.  You might try the Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend in May when the area becomes alive with tutored tastings, jazz bands and extravagant degustation menus.
