No other currency is usually accepted for transactions in Australia and where the total of a transaction is not a multiple of 5 cents the amount is rounded to the nearest five cents when paying with cash. If you are paying by card the exact amount will be charged.
All major credit cards are widely accepted throughout Australia. It is recommended when changing money to use banks in major cities to get the best rate and avoid airports and tourist centers as these generally charge a higher exchange rate fee. Travellers cheques are widely accepted and to avoid additional charges it is advised to take cheques in Australian or US Dollars or Euros.
Australia has a Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 10 per cent which is already included in displayed prices. When departing the country travellers are able to claim a refund for GST and WET (Wine Equalization Tax) paid on goods purchased in Australia. This is applicable to goods totaling $A300 (GST inclusive) or more that are being taken out of the country and that have been purchased no earlier than 30 days before leaving. Travellers may claim at Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) facilities located at international airports and cruise-liner terminals provided they show their passport, international boarding pass, retailer's tax invoice and the goods.
