The centre of the regions is Wollongong - a likable city with glorious natural surroundings, 17 wonderful surf beaches, a good range of accommodation, a lighthouse, harbour and a growing reputation as a city that appreciates fine food and wine. It is also home to Australia's largest regional gallery and a diverse culture, reflected with the Nan Tien Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the southern hemisphere.
A little further south, Kiama is famous for its amazing blowhole, whose strength varies according to the wind, waves and tides. Visit the Pilot's Cottage Museum, which tells the story of Kiama's colourful past, and Kiama Terrace, the row of weatherboard cottages constructed in 1886 to house quarry workers, now restored as a row of cafés, bookshops and arts and crafts shops.
