Two and a half hours north of Hobart, Launceston is Tasmania’s second-largest city. First settled in 1806, the city was Tasmania’s northern military base and a trading centre for wheat and wool farmers. Over time it has re-created itself, and is now home to some of the nation’s most stylish restaurants and accommodation options. The city is compact and pretty, and its streetscapes refl ect the changing architecture of the 19th century, with colourful Victorian and Edwardian homes lining hillsides along the river.

The city has a strong sense of identity and has one of the best regional galleries in Australia, along with art and craft galleries and quality restaurants. It’s also home to the J. Boag and Son brewery, a must-do for anyone who appreciates a fi ne brew. The unique Cataract Gorge is only a 15-minute walk from the centre of the city. Its Victorian parklands come complete with peacocks, and it has steep, rugged cliffs and wild areas that attract climbers, abseilers and bushwalkers.
Explore the Tamar Valley’s boutique cool-climate wineries, visiting elegant vineyard restaurants and meeting with the growers and the makers of the region. The nearby town of Longford preserves the architecture and community spirit of a country village of the 19th century, or pay a visit to Deloraine, a town of artists and farmers that hosts the nation’s largest annual working craft fair.
