Strahan Information

Tasmania's West Coast has successfully retained its natural wild and rugged character. As you head west along the Lyell Highway through the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park or south from Devonport, you know you are entering an ancient landscape: dense forests line the highway, dark rivers tumble through steep gorges, deep and wide lakes open up before you. This is a true wilderness frontier, waiting to be discovered.

Strahan is a harbour town on the edge of this West Coast wilderness, a place that evokes the true spirit of independence through its interesting history. Strahan is a gateway for cruises to the Gordon River and a terminus of the West Coast Wilderness Railway; travel inland on the railway through to the mining heritage of Queenstown. Strahan is also a good place to base yourself if you want to explore the wild and beautiful World Heritage Area. Explore the region in a variety of adventurous ways, and be sure to take a walk down Tasmania's longest beach, Ocean Beach, just out of town.
