Manihiki Information

Manihiki Island is known by locals as 'Island of Pearls', it is a remote idyllic atoll located 1100 kilometers from Raratonga. The surrounding ring of islands make a distinctive triangular shape and forms a barrier to the ocean with the coral reefs that join the islands. The centre of the atoll contains a large deep and spectacular lagoon that provides perfect conditions for the thriving pearl farmers.

Manihiki is one of the most isolated and secluded islands in the Cook Islands making it perfect for the traveller that really, really wants to get away from the rest of the world for a while. The island is absolutely stunning in its scenery and the locals are as usual, extremely friendly and welcoming. It takes a four hour flight from Raratonga to get to the island and visitors are asked to prepare for up to a two week delay returning depending on flight schedules or weather delays!

The lagoon is absolutely perfect for immersing yourself in the thriving marine ecosystem. The clear water, abundant fish and coral with warm waters make this as good a diving destination that you could hope for. Almost all of the local villagers are involved in the pearl industry. Mornings start with the humm of activity as the farmers start cleaning, moving and harvesting the black lipped oyster. The pearl farmers offer tours to visit the different farms and learn about how to seed and cultivate the oysters.

Game fishing tours are very popular as once out of the lagoon the odds of hooking a truly epic fish are very good.

For those that wish to travel to the edge of the world and holiday in tropical paradise, a trip to Manihiki will be on your shortlist. Its friendly locals, world class diving and extraordinary scenery make it one of the best, most remote tropical island getaways anywhere.
