No offense to Napoleon, but he never saw the Buckingham Palace, the gem of the British monarchy. A trip to London would not be complete without seeing the three-hundred year old establishment that the royal family have called ‘home’ since 1837.
Located in the Westminster district of London, the palace is easily accessed from St James’ station or by a magnificent walk down Pall Mall from Trafalgar Square. Most people go to see Buckingham Palace for the famed Changing of the Guard ceremony, the ritual where the guards of the palace swap places in terrifically stern actions of unison. These are the infamous guards not allowed to smile or acknowledge the distracting presence of cheeky tourists! Taking place at 11:30am sharp, the Changing of the Guards is definitely the event to aim for if you visit the palace. Between May and July the ceremony takes place daily and all other months is on every second day. Whenever you visit, you can easily see the famous balcony where the Royals appear at their weddings and on other key occasions.
As of the 1990s nineteen of the sixty-one rooms are open to public viewing in the summer months of July-September, while the Queen is away at the Scottish palace in Balmoral. The chance to see where modern-fairy tales have taken place will make you feel like royalty - touring through the royal gardens, Picture Gallery room and Ballroom amongst others. Tickets should be booked in advance as places fill up fast.
Although it might be hard to tear your eyes away from the ornate 18th century masterpiece, do wander around the Victoria Memorial in front of the Palace. The white marble sculpture built in Queen Victoria’s honour by her grandsons, George V and Wilhelm II, is testament to the monarchy’s principles of peace, justice, truth and victory. Gazing at the picture perfect palace and surrounding gardens in all their glory you’ll come to realise where the saying ‘dreams really do come true’ came from.
