Language & Communications
The most common language spoken in Singapore is English however Malay is the ‘national’ language. All official signs and documents are written in English. Singapore’s other official languages are Mandarin Chinese and Tamil.
The international telephone country code for Singapore is 65 with the three main telecommunication providers being Sing Tel, StarHub and MobileOne. Public phones are available everywhere and they are either coin-operated or card phones. Phone cards are available at all post offices and phone card agents. To make an international call from Singapore dial the access code 001 (for Sing Tel), 002 (for M1), and 008 (for StarHub), followed by the country code, area code and party’s number. Mobile phones are used by just about everyone and prepaid SIM cards are available at convenience stores and phone shops.
Wireless@SG system is available nationwide and visitors can use this for free but must register and receive a password via e-mail. The Infocomm Development Authority website will give you a current list of hotspots. Internet cafes, Mc Donalds, Coffee Bean Cafes and Starbucks are other options.
