Transport & Getting Around
Singapore’s transport system is among the best in the world and is very easy to get around, taxis are also cheap. The TransitLink Guide is worthwhile purchasing for a full listing of all bus and MRT rail routes. The MRT and LRT are trains which are cheap and very reliable and the network covers most points of interest for visitors. EZ-link cards are the easiest way to use the MRT as all lines are integrated so there is no need to purchase a new ticket to transfer. Buses are slower than the MRT and more difficult to use as the fare stage system is quite complex.
Taxis are everywhere and are reasonably priced and honest however be aware that the fare prices change depending on peak hour, late night, central business district, phone booking and public holidays. It is recommended not to hire a car as they are quite expensive as is petrol. Singaporeans drive on the left and the speed limit is 90 km/h on expressways and 50 km/h on other roads. All passengers must wear seatbelts and drink driving is not tolerated.
Singapore is extremely pedestrian-friendly and sidewalks and pedestrian crossings are everywhere and in great condition. Due to the heat and humidity it is wise to always carry water with you and frequent air-conditioned places often.
Almost all international traffic goes through Singapore Changi Airport. Airport departure tax is $21 and will be included in the cost of the air ticket. Changi is organized, efficient and vast and is served by the MRT for connections to the city.
