Singapore Botanic Gardens Information

The 183 acre Botanic Gardens of Singapore contains a massive collection of plant life that is native to Singapore. It is about a fifth of the area of Central Park and about one half that of the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens making it very large by todays standards.

The garden was first created in 1822 by Sir Stamford Raffles who was a passionate naturalist as well as being the architect of modern Singapore. The early days saw the garden staff working on which plants could be usefully grown and commercialised locally but thirty years later it was decided to turn much of the existing jungle area into a large public parkland containing comprehensive collections of plant species from around the world.

Over the next hundred years the Botanic gardens were credited with rubber plant cultivation, which created a new industry in Malaysia and were the original pioneers of orchid hybridisation. This history has resulted in the Singapore Botanic Gardens having the largest collection of tropical orchids anywhere in the world.

Within the garden complex are several stand alone attractions, the most popular of these is the National Orchid Garden, which contains the VIP orchid garden, the Orchidarium, the Tan Hoon Siang Mist-house and the Cool-house. Other key attractions include the six hectare rainforest section, the ten hectare Evolution Garden, the Ginger garden which includes a restaurant, the Jacob Ballas Children's Garden and the Botany Centre which is home to much of the research conducted in the gardens.
