There are several things about the area that make it stand out. There is great shopping due to it's proximity to Cambodia and the coastal trade. In fact you'll find more markets per square kilometre here than in almost any other Thai township. Gem mining, more specifically ruby, is one of Trat's important industries so it's not hard to find gem markets nearby. The area is also ideal for those looking for a nature getaway with some beautiful rainforests to explore and more than fifty islands just off shore. There are also several beach resorts that have been constructed along the coast near Trat township which are comfortable and reasonably priced.
Trat has many religious and historically important buildings in the area including Wat Yotha Nimit, Wat Khiri Wihan, Wat Saphan Hin, and Wat Buppharam. And if you're looking to 'cast a line' or 'catch some rays' there are some lovely beaches for swimming or fishing at Hat Sai Ngam, Laem Klat, Hat Muk Kaeo, and Laem Klat.
The weather in Trat is warm throughout the year and ideal for enjoying the gorgeous countryside, however the wet season between October and May can be very stormy.
