The bustling heart of Acapulco

Acapulco is a vibrant, sprawling city that is centred around its main square, called Plaza Juan Alvarez. The Plaza is the cultural and commercial heart of Acapulco, and a regular meeting place for tourists and locals alike. Lining the perimeter are a number of stylish bars and restaurants, stalls selling local handicrafts and art, and popular street entertainers performing unique acts.

One of the highlights of the Plaza is the iconic cathedral that dates back to the 17th Century. This is a definite must-see and a lovely historic twist on the other modern sights in Acapulco.

Discover the stories of ancient Acapulco

To learn more about the intriguing stories of Acapulco’s past, you might want to head to Fuerte San Diego. Located on the Pacific Coast, this impressive star-shaped fortress was built to guard the port and the city from pirate raids in the early 1700s. It was then rebuilt in 1778 after an earthquake destroyed much of the ancient stonework.

Today, the Fuerte serves as a museum, sharing the city's fascinating past and the changes that have occurred over the years. It’s open to the public from 9.30am to 6.30pm on Tuesdays through to Sundays.
