Visit Art Gallery of South Australia
The Art Gallery of South Australia on North Terrace is among the many cultural icons of Adelaide. It houses art of all forms, from paintings to sculpture and metalwork sourced from around the world. The Gallery also plays host to a number of special exhibits throughout the year.
Originally opened in 1881, the Gallery has been delighting viewers for more than a century and now entertains more than 500,000 visitors a year. General entry is free, although you must pay admission to some special exhibits, and the gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm.
Pay respects at National War Memorial
On the corner of North Terrace and Kintore Avenue is an imposing grey marble structure, built from 1928 to 1931 as a memorial to the brave Australians who lost their lives during World War I. When it was unveiled, on Anzac Day 1931, the crowd that turned up could not all fit round the memorial, so the organisers held a second ceremony later in the day.
Although originally built to honour those who fought in the Great War, it has now grown to include Australians who fell in later wars. You can view the memorial on its own or as part of the Rundle Mall Discovery Trail, which takes you on a route that takes in many of Adelaide's highlights
