Attractions near the Alice Springs Plaza Hotel

Hop into the Kangaroo Sanctuary

This 36-hectare wildlife sanctuary began as a baby kangaroo rescue centre in 2005 and is now a popular tourist destination. Sunset tours lasting over two hours are available on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and coincide with the time of day kangaroos are at their most active.

The tours showcase the iconic red kangaroo’s behaviour and natural habitat through the eyes of Indigenous locals. The sanctuary is home to Brolga, star of the Kangaroo Dundee television show seen on BBC and Animal Planet. Free transfers are available from the hotel.

Planes, trains, trucks and automobiles

Step back in time at The Old Ghan Heritage Railway and Museum. You’ll wander through restored sleeping and dining carriages, witness old locomotives and take a 10-kilometre train ride from a 1930s-style railway station just south of Alice Springs. A museum, tea house and souvenir shop can also be visited.

Other historic workhorses are on display at the National Road Transport Hall of Fame. There are more than 100 restored trucks and vintage cars to enthral novices and motor enthusiasts alike, while the Central Australian Aviation Museum is home to two early Flying Doctor planes as well as other historic aircraft and aviation memorabilia.
