Finding artisan goods
One enjoyable way to spend a leisurely Sunday morning in Athens is to head along to the popular Monastiraki flea markets in Avissynias Square. Get amongst the crowds and browse an assortment of curios, with paintings, books, trinkets, vintage clothing and other treasures to be found.
The eclectic flea market jumble is perfectly complemented by the lively atmosphere, with both locals and tourists getting hustling for vintage bargains. Grab a coffee or a kebab along the way at one of the many quaint and welcoming tavernas and cafes, and sit back to take in the vibrant scenes of the Monastiraki.
Metro lines, bus routes and trams from all over the city converge at the bustling hub, Syntagma Square, right in the centre of Athens. This large, busy plaza is the most important in the city, with the Houses of Parliament located here alongside the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Come and watch traditionally dressed members of the Presidential Guard (Evzones) perform the 11am daily Changing of the Guard ceremony – a truly iconic Athens sight. On Sundays the guards take it up a notch, delighting spectators by wearing their ceremonial kilts complete with clogs and pom poms.
