Odeum of Herodes Atticus
Let yourself be amazed by the sight of this historic amphitheatre built into the southwest hillside of the Acropolis. Constructed in 161 AD by wealthy philhellene Herodes Atticus as a tribute to his wife, the outdoor theatre still hosts performances today.
It's impressive enough when viewed from street level, but if you’re lucky enough to get your hands on a ticket for a concert or play, the experience is unforgettable. Be transported back more 2000 years when crowds gathered in Roman times to listen to musical performances overlooking the city beyond, and marvel at the perfect acoustics ringing out around the magnificent stone structure.
The ancient stadium
This dazzling white-marble Panathenaic Stadium dates back to ancient times when its seats were made of wood and it hosted the Panathenaic Games in honour of the Goddess Athena. The ancient design of the stadium renders it obsolete for formal racing events in the modern era, due to the sharp bends on its racetrack. It has been used to host various events throughout modern history including Olympic archery events.
Nowadays the stadium is mostly used for concerts and public events, and as a lasting legacy of Greek sporting prowess. It is also frequently used for the end of marathons as well as ceremonial celebratory homecomings for Greek athletes.
