Cruising around Auckland Harbour
You can step out of the hotel and straight into the hub of the city’s water transport: the ferry terminal. Various tour companies offer a range of cruises that depart here including sailing adventures, whale and dolphin safaris, island escapes and romantic tours.
You can choose to spend a day fishing, seeing the Waitomo glow worm caves, visiting the famous ‘Hole in the Rock’, taking in 360-degree views on a classic harbour cruise or watching the sun set on one of the dinner cruises. There's also a public ferry service that includes transfers to various points along the North Shore as well as Rangitoto, Waiheke and Great Barrier Islands, Half Moon Bay, and Pine Harbour.
Auckland’s volcanic history
Auckland is built on more than 50 (currently dormant) volcanos, and volcanic eruptions have given this city its unique landscape. At 196 metres tall, Mount Eden is the highest of Auckland’s volcanos. The summit is accessible by car or foot and boasts panoramic views of the city and harbour.
Not far away sits One Tree Hill, one of the city’s oldest and most culturally significant volcanos, which features a historic obelisk at its peak. You can also visit Rangitoto Island, the region’s most iconic (and most recently formed) natural landmark, which erupted just 600 years ago.
