Discover the delights of the Domain
Take a day to explore Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park located just over two kilometres from the city centre. Set out over 75 hectares, the park is home to the Auckland War Memorial Museum, formal gardens, duck ponds, bushwalks, fernery and rolling green expanses of lawn. Take a picnic rug and find a patch of grass to relax on in this green oasis, or grab a coffee at the cafe.
Make sure you visit The Wintergarden, a complex made up of two huge greenhouses located inside the Domain. This protected heritage site houses temperate plants in one greenhouse and tropical plants in the other. There's also a formal courtyard with a pond and a fernery within an old quarry.
Climb One Tree Hill
A short 15-minute drive from your hotel is one of Auckland’s most famous landmarks, One Tree Hill. This 182-metre-high volcanic peak overlooks the city and offers 360-degree views. An impressive obelisk, which sits over the grave of John Logan Campbell who gifted the land to the city in 1901, marks the summit of the hill.
Take some time to explore the surrounding Cornwall Park area, which is home to Acacia Cottage. This historic cottage dates back to 1841 and is Auckland’s oldest building. Hang about until the sun goes down and then visit the nearby Stardome Observatory for an unforgettable stargazing experience and planetarium show.
