A short walk to forbidden land

Just next door to Raffles Beijing is the infamous Forbidden City. Home to 24 emperors during the Ming and Qing dynasties, the Palace Museum (as it is now known) is a place of immense history and culture. The Palace has more than 8,700 rooms and is the world’s largest palace complex, covering 74 hectares. Enclosed by a moat and a 10-metre-high wall, it was the official imperial palace for five centuries.

Discover the ancient artisan skills used to build the Palace, including the outer walls – bricks made from white lime and glutinous rice, and the cement made from glutinous rice and egg whites. Explore the outer and inner courts of the Palace to discover how emperors and royal families lived.

World art in one place

Take a short drive north of the city centre to the Dashanzi area, a former factory spot now turned art hub. Known as the Dashanzi Art District (DAD) or '798 Art Zone' (the name of its main building), this area is now a vibrant melting pot of international contemporary art.

The classic Bauhaus buildings have attracted an increasing number of art organisations, galleries, designers, fashion stores, and hip restaurants and cafes. With imports from Europe, Asia and Australia, as well as innovative locals, Dashanzi is well-equipped to host fashion shows and exhibitions that draw an eclectic crowd.
