Crown Liquor Saloon
There aren’t too many pubs in the world that have earned National Trust status, but Belfast’s Crown Liquor Saloon is one such place. The gorgeous Victorian architecture can be enjoyed over a pint at this famous Belfast institution, located across the road from the Grand Opera House. The stained glass, elaborate marble ceramics and atmospheric lighting inside equally match the pretty external facade of colourful tiles and mosaics.
Legend has it the owner, catholic Patrick Flanagan, was persuaded to name the ‘Crown’ by his protestant wife in honour of the British Monarchy. He then commissioned a large mosaic crown on the pavement which people would inadvertently trample on every day as his own secret insult to the Monarchy.
