Tolkien’s towering inspiration

Built in 1758, Perrott's Folly is a tower that stretches 29 metres high, reaching far above the local buildings. Some say Perrott built it to get a view over all the land he owned or to see his former wife's grave, some distance away. Others say it was to spot game for hunting or to simply impress the neighbours.

You can take a tour of the seven floors and climb the spiral staircase to the top, where an elegant drawing room with domed ceiling can be entered. Perrott's Folly and another tower nearby are said to be the inspiration for J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and specialised Tolkien tours are available.

Birmingham’s most unique bar

The city’s historic Bacchus Bar is found on one of the oldest streets in Birmingham. Located in a dimly-lit basement, it provides a unique environment full of pictures, antique items, and artefacts.

Set over a series of interconnecting rooms, Bacchus Bar includes a traditional drawing room, an English library, a bedroom, and an ancient Egyptian tomb. The walls are panelled with dark wood and hung with heavy drapes, and there's the occasional Roman statue standing guard. Good pub food complements the atmosphere, as does the extensive selection of ales.
