Artworks from around the world

The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (BMAG) is located in a landmark building in the city's centre, which is known for its famous clock tower called ‘Big Brum’. Originally opened in 1885, the Museum is home to an impressive permanent collection of artworks. Most date from the 14th to the 20th centuries and include many international masterpieces. The Museum also holds a number of works from ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt.

When you enter the museum, you might notice the motto over the door: ‘By the Gains of Industry, We Promote Art’.  This refers to the fact that the profits from Birmingham's industrial revolution days provided the money to found the Museum.
