The mighty pen

In 1839, English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton proclaimed, "The pen is mightier than the sword". It's a motto that many people of Birmingham value for a particularly good reason. In the 19th Century, Birmingham was a leader in the production of pens. Today, a former pen factory is home to the Pen Museum. Back in the pen-making days, this was just one of 100 pen factories in the city's Jewellery Quarter.

The Museum is home to a collection of more than 5,000 pens and objects related to the history of writing. The interactive exhibits are surprisingly fun; you can try writing with a quill, examine the machinery used to make steel pens and see demonstrations of the process.

Shopping at Selfridges

Selfridges has been a major retailer in the United Kingdom since 1909, but the spectacular Birmingham Selfridges building was created in 2003. This innovative structure is totally unique, with exterior walls that seem to flow in and out without any corners. The building is covered in 15,000 metal disks, with a translucent tunnel emerging from one side.

Once you’re inside the store, you can find sculptured tunnels and escalators, along with an atrium lit from the roof. The unusual architecture was one of the reasons this store was named one of the top 100 to visit in the world.
