Tour the Itamaraty Palace
As well as having a functional use still carried out by the Brazilian Foreign Service, the striking Itamaraty Palace is a great place to take a tour, particularly if you're impressed by unique architecture and building styles.
Outside the palace you'll be free to wander the well-manicured gardens and admire the different sculptures dotted throughout. The palace is open on weekday afternoons from 2pm to 4pm and from 10am to 3pm Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Free guided tours take one hour and are available in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. Note that sometimes tours may be postponed due to official foreign visits.
See Santuario Dom Bosco
Originally opened in 1957 on the edge of a lake, Santuario Dom Bosco is one of the first temples built in Brasilia. The sanctuary does nothing by halves and you'll be in awe at the sheer size – the eighty 16-metre tall columns, the 3.5-metre tall chandelier and the 10-ton pink granite altar are just some of the highlights.
Visiting on a sunny day is best, as the light plays beautifully with the stained glass windows created in 12 shades of blue, giving the place an ethereal, peaceful feel.
