Strolling along the Brighton Pier
Sitting proudly on the waterfront is the world-famous Brighton Pier. It was originally built in 1823 as a landing dock for passenger ships heading to France, but it wasn't long before entertainment booths and stalls selling sweets sprang up. The original pier was swept away in a fierce storm and the rebuilt Brighton Marine Palace & Pier was opened with great fanfare in 1899.
Today, the Pier is very popular with families, couples and solo travellers. There are amusement park rides, kiosks selling fairy floss and plenty of side show booths where you can test your skills.
The old jail cells
Like any city, Brighton has had its share of crime, which has kept the local police busy. You can take an interesting and entertaining look at the history of policing in Brighton and Sussex at the Old Police Cells Museum, which is located in the basement of the Brighton Town Hall.
During your visit, you can see the old main police station and peer into the gloomy cells where prisoners were once kept. Information is everywhere, letting you learn about crucial moments in history such as the time when a suspect murdered the Chief Constable in 1844. At one point, a group of raucous mods and rockers were arrested after fighting on the beach and they left a lot of graffiti on the cell walls, which you can still see today.
