The maritime history of Brighton

Long before Brighton became a tourist mecca, it was a bustling fishing community. In the 1700s, doctors began prescribing the water at Brighton for its health benefits, which led to its development as a fashionable resort town. The town became popular with day-trippers and holidaymakers, but still the fishing industry continued.

The Brighton Fishing Museum takes you through the history of this seaside town, with many historic photographs, film clips, paintings and memorabilia. You can also see the traditional Sussex clinker fishing boats. The Museum is located in the Fishing Quarter, where boats still bring in a fresh catch every day.
