Discover old Cairns at the cemetery

Under the cool shade of tall pines and native trees, the McLeod Street Pioneer Cemetery offers a glimpse into the early history of Cairns and Far North Queensland. The cemetery was established in 1877 and is now a protected cultural and historic site popular with tourists and with people researching their family history.

Regular guided tours give visitors an insight into life in the first pioneering years of Cairns. There are people buried here who flocked to Queensland from all around the world in the state's early days, with the old gravestones bearing the marks of over 100 years of the tropical climate.

Past history meets present culture

During the Second World War a number of naval oil storage tanks were built and camouflaged in the shadow of Mount Whitfield. Sixty years later, what were once rusting hunks of metal are now home to the Tanks Art Centre – an organisation that seeks to engage the community with cultural expression. Now part of the Cairns Botanic Gardens precinct, this is the perfect place to see how vibrant Cairns’ cultural life really is.

On the last Sunday of each month (from April to November) the Tanks Art Centre runs a market on Collins Avenue in Cairns. Items for sale include the work of local artisans, locally grown produce and vintage clothing. Musicians provide live entertainment and there are free workshops for kids.
