Get into the culture of Cairns
Beaches and water sports may be the main attractions on your mind when you visit tropical Cairns but don’t miss out on the art galleries too. The Cairns Regional Gallery is in a gorgeous heritage building on the corner of Abbott and Shields streets and has 4 floors of fascinating art and photography, both historic and contemporary.
This is a great place to see Indigenous art as well as incredible images of Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef. The permanent collection is a window on the unique cultural heritage of Queensland’s Far North. A highlight is certainly the Loft Emerging Artists Program (LEAP) featuring emerging talent, located on the top floor of the gallery.
A peaceful picnic at Lake Morris
It is difficult to believe this peaceful jungle-surrounded lake is less than half an hour’s drive west of central Cairns. The Lake Morris reservoir in the Whitfield Ranges has supplied water to the city since the Copperload Dam was built in the 1970s. The lake is often beautifully still, showing perfect reflections of the surrounding luxuriant rainforest.
Enjoy a picnic here, or grab a drink or snacks from the kiosk. Information boards show rainforest walks and there is a viewing deck. The road to Lake Morris is a treat in itself, passing through pristine forest, and there is an amazing lookout point from which you can see right across Cairns and Trinity Inlet.
