Wander down the Royal Mile, browsing the pretty gift shops and delightful cafes along the cobbled streets and laneways. At one end stands Edinburgh's best-known landmark: Edinburgh Castle. And at the opposite end of the Royal Mile is the elegant stately home and official Scottish residence of the Queen: Holyrood Palace.

You can stroll around the State Apartments and Abbey ruins at Holyrood Palace, or marvel at the fascinating history, breathtaking scenery and the Crown Jewels at Edinburgh Castle, before stopping in for a refreshing ale at one of the Royal Mile's inviting historic pubs.

Mystery and adventure below the streets

Just a short drive south of the city centre is one of Edinburgh's most curious heritage sites, Gilmerton Cove. The series of incredible hand-carved sandstone tunnels and chambers complete with original stone tables and benches has been perfectly preserved, fascinating both visitors and archaeologists with its mysterious and unknown origins.

You can enter the Cove from an unassuming traditional mining cottage, where you learn about the excavation and the various theories about Edinburgh's greatest mystery, before venturing underground to experience the remarkable historic attraction for yourself.
