The streets of Fort Kochi
You can take a walk in any direction from the hotel to see the many historical sites of Kochi. To the north of Fort Kochi Beach, Chinese fishing nets can be seen draped over the waters at the mouth of the city’s waterways. This ancient art of fishing has been used since Portuguese settlers from Macau introduced it to the local fishermen. Utilising a complex system of ropes and counterweights, the horizontal nets stretch out over the water, with each being operated by a team of six fishermen.
Although traditionally an industrial activity, in more recent times this style of fishing has become a tourist attraction. If you ask the fishermen nicely, they might even pose for a photo. Just remember to buy a little something from them in return.
